Our History

Inner Sunset Community Advocates or “ISCA” (originally called the “Park Sunset Housing Corporation”) was formed as a non-profit, 501(c)(4) charitable corporation in 1973.  It began as a project of the Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, when church leaders envisioned building affordable housing on land previously owned by the church for low-income, seniors, and the disabled in the heart of the Inner Sunset community of San Francisco.   Vision became reality when ISCA finished construction of 30 units of HUD-subsidized affordable housing called the “Park Sunset Apartments.”   For over forty years, ISCA’s Directors maintained Park Sunset Apartments, ensured its continued viability, and tended to the well-being of its low-income residents.  In 2015, ISCA sold Park Sunset Apartments on terms that will ensure the apartments remain affordable senior housing for decades to come.

With the proceeds from sale of Park Sunset Apartments and with approvals from the California Attorney General’s Office, ISCA launched a new mission in 2016 “to empower marginalized people to improve the quality of their lives and their communities and to foster transformation in San Francisco and the Bay Area.”  As its name suggests, central to ISCA’s mission is the value of building healthy and transformative communities, especially among marginalized persons.  ISCA’s Directors represent a wide array of experience and expertise in San Francisco’s communities, including the arts, social services, law, healthcare, religion, and non-profit professionals.
